Since the development of surface manufacturing technology requires more detailed research of designing the curved lines, the modern engineer faces the problem of the free-form technical objects models precise construction. The article considers the way to solve this problem by means of utilizing the computer-aided design systems and tools to construct the mathematical curves. As an example we examine some of the most frequently encountered lines in engineering, such as the cycloidal curves, the Archimedes' spiral and the sinusoid. For each line, we specify its application area and present a technique of modelling the detail containing this curve in the CAD system.
