The paper gives a detailed account of the concepts "standard" and "standardization". We studied the standardization development from the ancient times to the present day. This work describes the role of standardization as a tool for competitiveness and efficiency of the partnership between the designer, manufacturer, supervisor, customer, and supplier. Moreover, we examined the interrelation between standards and innovation and identified the promising directions in standardization development.
