Development of style and layout solutions for a five-axis milling machine

The paper presents the process of modernizing a five-axis CNC milling machine using the design approach, i.e. through development of the style and layout solutions. Several options were developed for the machine layout at the conceptual search stage, and stylistic areas were identified, they were demonstrated using the original author’s illustrations obtained as part of the project work. Besides, the paper presents a 3D visualization of the machine final design concept and the layout photo. The work process involved a wide range of design methods and tools, including sketching, 3D simulation and prototyping. Conclusions were drawn about the need to involve industrial designers in development of the competitive domestic equipment.
