The article analyzes the problem of developing the creative potential of an individual in the contemporary society. It describes the importance of the creative process as the key factor of satisfying the social needs. We consider the notions of creativity and information society. The positive and negative aspects of informatization are shown. This work reveals the tendencies of decreasing the thinking activity of modern people. We justify the need of using the special methods of developing the creative potential at higher educational institutions. Based on the analysis of the Meredith Tring’s concept the article suggests some techniques of overcoming the template thinking in engineering education such as the direct-search method and the brainstorming technique.
